Best Stripe alternatives for 2026 payments
Paddle, Braintree, and Polar — merchant-of-record tax handling, PayPal reach, and a simpler checkout if Stripe’s account rules or country coverage get in the way.

Let's Talk About Stripe
Stripe is the default card API for a lot of teams: clean docs, webhooks, and a dashboard that engineers actually open. It is also not licensed everywhere, and account reviews can freeze payouts with little warning. Depending on what you sell, another processor may be less work.
Paddle

Paddle acts as merchant of record, so VAT and GST invoices are their problem, not yours. Fees sit above Stripe’s headline rate; the trade is not hiring a tax stack for every country you sell into. That is why a lot of SaaS teams leave Stripe once they have customers in Europe.
Braintree

Braintree is PayPal’s developer-facing processor. You get card vaulting and a full API, plus PayPal and Venmo on the same merchant account. If a large share of checkout already says “Pay with PayPal,” this is usually less glue than bolting PayPal onto Stripe.
Polar

Polar is a merchant-of-record checkout aimed at indie SaaS and digital products. Product pages, subscriptions, and tax collection ship without you standing up Stripe Billing. Lemon Squeezy now sits inside Stripe, so Polar is the independent MoR people actually compare to Paddle.
Payment tools fail on country coverage, tax paperwork, or checkout friction — not on who has the prettiest dashboard. Pick the one that removes the work you do not want to own.
